European telcos count on 4G for pricing power

European telecom operators are planning to charge customers more for faster new fourth-generation (4G) mobile services in the hope of recouping massive network investments and clawing back lost pricing power.


It's a risky approach since it could put off recession-weary customers and slow the adoption of a technology that benefits telcos by lowering operating costs and helping reduce network overload.

Ciena helps Samsung deploy optical mesh network

Ciena Corporation, a supplier of telecommunications network equipment, on Monday announced that Samsung SDS Co., Ltd., an information and communications technology service provider, has deployed Ciena's full portfolio of intelligent Packet-Optical Switching, Packet-Optical Transport, Carrier Ethernet (CES) and ON-Center Management Suite services to create its own private network, which will connect offices and employees across multiple locations globally.

U.S. probes China telecoms for ties to communist government

U.S. lawmakers are pressing two top Chinese technology companies to disclose their inner workings in a probe into security threats to U.S. telecommunications. Closely held Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corp were asked Tuesday by letter to document, among other things, their interactions with the Chinese Communist Party and advice given to them by five consultancies, including International Business Machines Corp, Accenture and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). ZTE also was asked about its business in Iran.

Verizon Wireless is revamping its prices with new service plans that include unlimited calls and texts and the ability for customers to share their data allowance among multiple devices as it looks to shake up the U.S. wireless industry.


The biggest U.S. mobile operator is hoping to entice customers to connect more gadgets like tablet computers to its network with the new plans as customers will be able avoid paying separate data subscriptions for each device.

Report: small cells and WiFi to handle 60% of mobile traffic over next 5 years

A new report from Juniper Research has found that while the level of data delivered to mobile devices is expected to continue to expand dramatically over the next five years, service providers will offload nearly 60% of traffic in that period. According to the report, service providers are increasingly seeking to reduce the strain on their network caused by the proliferation of connected smart devices by deploying their own WiFi hotspot networks and offering small cell solutions to end-users.

Vodafone, Telefonica form joint venture for shared 4G UK grid

Report: LTE equipment to hit $17.5 billion in 2016

The global 2G, 3G, and 4G equipment market decreased 14% to just under $10 billion in the first quarter of 2012 following an 8% increase the previous quarter, reports market research firm Infonetics Research in its new report.

4G mobile networks to cover half the world by 2017, says Ericsson

Half the world will have access to 4G mobile networks by 2017 providing the high-speed Internet access needed to download videos and play games on smartphones, Ericsson said in a report on the telecoms market on Tuesday.
