Verizon Wireless unveils shared data plans; rivals may follow

Verizon Wireless is revamping its prices with new service plans that include unlimited calls and texts and the ability for customers to share their data allowance among multiple devices as it looks to shake up the U.S. wireless industry.


The biggest U.S. mobile operator is hoping to entice customers to connect more gadgets like tablet computers to its network with the new plans as customers will be able avoid paying separate data subscriptions for each device.

Report: small cells and WiFi to handle 60% of mobile traffic over next 5 years

A new report from Juniper Research has found that while the level of data delivered to mobile devices is expected to continue to expand dramatically over the next five years, service providers will offload nearly 60% of traffic in that period. According to the report, service providers are increasingly seeking to reduce the strain on their network caused by the proliferation of connected smart devices by deploying their own WiFi hotspot networks and offering small cell solutions to end-users.

Vodafone, Telefonica form joint venture for shared 4G UK grid

Report: LTE equipment to hit $17.5 billion in 2016

The global 2G, 3G, and 4G equipment market decreased 14% to just under $10 billion in the first quarter of 2012 following an 8% increase the previous quarter, reports market research firm Infonetics Research in its new report.

Asian nations need to close growing infrastructure gaps, says Alcatel-Lucent

Last week at the World Economic Forum on East Asia in Bangkok, Alcatel-Lucent said by the end of the decade Asia will need to invest $1.1 trillion in its telecom infrastructure to compete in the digital economy.


According to the telecom equipment provider, over the past five years, Asia has added 1.5 billion additional mobile subscribers; yet still more than 25% of Asians live without basic mobile services. Over the next five years governments and business will need to add another 1.3 billion mobile subscribers to bridge the gap, says Alcatel-Lucent (Paris). 

AT&T says rural lines sale may be too difficult

On Friday, AT&T Inc Chief Executive Randall Stephenson said that a sale of rural phone lines may be too difficult to pull off because of regulatory hurdles. Stephenson had said in January that the company would review the future of its roughly 20 million rural telephone lines, including the possibility for a sale. But selling the phone lines could be difficult because of their diverse geographic locations, the executive said on Friday in a webcast of a Sanford C.

Huawei, ZTE deny receiving illegal subsidy

China's top telecoms equipment makers Huawei and ZTE denied receiving illegal government subsidies that helped them undercut rivals in recent years, after media reported the European Union planned to take action over unfair trade practices. Action by the EU could spark a trade war, analysts warned.

Comcast launches free phone calls over WiFi

On Tuesday, Comcast, a U.S. cable operator, announced a free Xfinity Voice feature that brings mobile voice technologies to the home phone. The new feature, called Voice 2go, allows customers to make phone calls and send text messages for free, when made within a WiFi network, such as in a customer's home or on a public WiFi hotspot.  This new service could potentially cut into wireless mobile operators’ revenue.

Huawei signs managed services agreement with Telefonica UK

Huawei, a provider of telecommunications equipment, on Monday announced it has signed a five year managed services agreement with Telefónica UK.  Under the agreement Huawei will manage planning and implementation of the Telefónica UK mobile core network. 


The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed
